When "Just Start" Feels Like A Threat: Why It Didn't Work for Me (And What Did)
For the overthinkers, planners, and anxious creatives who need more than a motivational catchphrase.
Have you ever been told to "just start"?
It sounds so simple. So freeing. So motivating. But for some of us, it feels like a brick wall of pressure disguised as encouragement.
I wanted to start. I had the ideas. I had the passion. I even had notebooks and files full of planning and dreaming. But whenever someone told me to "just start," I froze. Not because I didn’t want to—but because I didn’t know how.
Here’s what I needed instead: a plan. A path. And permission to go at my own pace.
"Just Start" Feels Paralyzing When:
-
You don’t know what to start with
-
You feel like you have to do it all at once
-
You’re scared you’ll waste time, money, or energy
-
You’re overwhelmed by tech, tools, and decisions
-
You want things to feel intentional, not rushed
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And you're not broken. You're thoughtful.
What Helped Me Move Forward
Instead of "just starting," I gave myself a new phrase:
Start with a plan. Then take one small, beautiful step.
Here’s what actually helped:
🧠Using ChatGPT to organize my thoughts
I wrote down who I was, what I wanted to do, and how I wanted to sound. ChatGPT helped me shape those ideas into real content.
🎨 Using Canva to make visuals that felt like me
Once I had content, I wanted to present it beautifully. Canva’s free plan was enough to get started without getting lost in the details.
🎤 Using Eleven Labs to test voiceovers
Even though I wasn't ready to record myself, Eleven Labs helped me bring words to life in a way that felt fun, not intimidating.
✏️ Making a simple content plan
I stopped trying to build the whole house and just picked the first room. I started with one blog post. Then another. And it built from there.
What You Can Do Instead of "Just Starting"
-
Write down what you actually want to create
-
Introduce yourself to ChatGPT (I made a free prompt to help with that)
-
Make a list of steps, even if they feel small
-
Pick one platform to focus on first
-
Celebrate clarity, not just action
You don’t need to go viral. You don’t need to be everywhere.
You just need a beautiful plan—and permission to be a beginner with purpose.
Don't Get Discouraged
If you've felt stuck because "just start" didn’t work for you, this blog is for you.
You're not lazy. You're not behind. You're just building something that matters.
And that starts with a plan that fits your life.
